The case

Why counsel near the U.S. District Court, Fort Lauderdale use custody storage

Federal deadlines do not move for a locksmith

The practical argument for off-site custody in federal practice is not security, it is availability. A document in a partner's office safe is available when that partner is in the office. A document in custody with three named authorized parties is available when any of the three can get there. In a district where continuances are not casually granted, that difference is worth more than a better lock.

Corporate originals in commercial litigation

Southern District civil work runs heavily to commercial disputes, and commercial disputes run on corporate records — executed agreements, minute books, share registers, closing binders. These are exactly the documents a company keeps badly, because they were signed once and filed by whoever was there. Producing a clean original from documented custody is a materially different position to producing a copy someone found.

Chain of custody that predates the dispute

Custody established before a matter arises is worth more than custody established after one does. The record shows the document was deposited on a date, by a named party, and not touched since. That is a dull fact until authenticity is questioned, at which point it is the only fact that matters.

Access

Getting to the vault from the U.S. District Court, Fort Lauderdale

The federal courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale sits a few blocks from the state complex, so the drive is the same short run north toward the coast. What differs is the calendar. Federal practice in the Southern District moves on deadlines that do not slide easily, and that changes how retrieval gets booked — counsel here tend to schedule the withdrawal against the filing date rather than against the hearing, and to build in a day. We would rather hold something an extra day than be the reason a deadline is missed.

Questions counsel ask

Do you provide any form of evidence custody?
No, and we want to be precise about this. We provide documented commercial custody of property deposited by a client — an inventory, a deposit record and named authorized access. That is not the same thing as a forensic evidence chain, and it should not be represented to a court as one. If your matter needs the latter, you need a different provider.
Can several people at the firm be authorized?
Yes. Multiple authorized parties are the normal setup for firm accounts, and they are the point — a single-authorized-party arrangement recreates the availability problem you were trying to solve. Authorizations are recorded at intake and changed in writing.
How far is the facility from the U.S. District Court, Fort Lauderdale?
About 14 minutes from the U.S. District Court, Fort Lauderdale in normal traffic. We are at 3562 N Ocean Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, on the Galt Ocean Mile.
Can you collect from my office instead of the client’s home?
Yes. Low-profile armored collection is available throughout South Florida in unmarked vehicles. Many intakes run through counsel rather than through the client.
How quickly can custody be arranged?
Same week in most cases, and same day where a date is imminent. The limiting factor is usually the inventory, not the vault.
What do you tell a court if asked?
We comply with valid subpoenas and court orders. We tell counsel that before intake, not after. Nothing here is designed to conceal property from lawful process.
